THE ARTERRE OF GATINEAU
WHAT IS ARTERRE?
ARTERRE is acustom mesh service. We accompany and matchaspiring farmersandowner-operatorsandnon-operators. Our objective: to facilitate access to the agricultural world, establishment. We favor the establishment of succession through the acquisition/leasing of assets, the creation of partnerships and the takeover of farms (without identified succession) to ensure the sustainability of agricultural businesses and heritage.
We accompany the candidates in a proven and free process, from the adhesion to the conclusion of the agreement. To this end, we collaborate, at the local and regional levels, with stakeholders and existing networks: entrepreneurship advisors, settlement and succession advisors, financing and tax advisors, management advisors, legal advisors, etc.
Note: Support from the networking agent is free. That said, the use of other expertise can be profitable.
IN GATINEAU
Following the adoption of theDevelopment plan for the area and agricultural activities(PDZAA), in 2018, Gatineau joined the provincial program L'ARTERRE. From now on, it offers the service, through the TAO, to be more attractive and equipped to encourage start-up/establishment, development and diversification in agriculture.
Why choose Gatineau?
Gatineau-Ottawa is a pool of 1.2 million citizens/consumers backed by peri-urban agricultural land that offers development opportunities.
The market
It is a basin whose socio-demographic profile (concentration, ethnic diversity, etc.) and socio-economic profile (higher levels of education and income, stability, etc.) is favorable to buying local and specialty products. Distribution channels and transportation networks, such as recreational tourism, add to the advantages of the territory.
Over the market
Also, Gatineau is 13,310 hectares of agricultural land (39% of the territory) distributed, like a green belt bypassing urban areas, at the territorial ends and north of Highway 50. Clayey (mainly) , the soils are suitable for cereals, legumes and other grains; fodder; and even certain vegetable crops (garlic, cucurbits and corn). To the north, the rocky and sandy loams are less favorable, but they have potential for upgrading. Other possible fields: agroforestry, ornamental horticulture, greenhouse cultivation and, of course, animal husbandry.
The humid continental climate and the growing season lasting from 200 to 216 days (among the longest in Quebec) are favorable to diversified agriculture.
Finally, although the price of land per hectare is higher in Gatineau than in the rest of the region, it remains advantageous compared to the price in other peri-urban agricultural areas located near major population centers. . Be that as it may, Gatineau is more conducive to the development of local and specialty productions than to that of traditional productions requiring large areas. As such, Gatineau has 1 agritourism and gourmet circuit (Gatineau circuit, Parcours Outaouais Gourmet), and 5 public markets.
